A Tribute to Goldie

GoldieGoldie, our beautiful palomino mare, died suddenly in late July. On Saturday, the day before, she was one hundred percent Goldie: happy to eat her breakfast and go out into the pasture with the other horses. My horse helper, Madeline, and I both spent time with Goldie and noticed nothing amiss. At dinner time she was at the gate, ready to come in and eat, and as usual vying with our mare, Meadow, to come in first!

When I got out to the barn at about 6:30 on Sunday morning and started to collect the feed buckets, I slid open the door to Goldie’s stall and found her lying there, her life gone. She had finished her dinner, and there was plenty of manure in her paddock. There was no sign of disturbance except for where she fell.

I was so shocked. Her body was still warm and not stiff. I couldn’t get a signal on my phone so I ran to the house to get Scott, my husband. I felt cold and could not get the words out of my mouth. There was no way to imagine this was coming.

Our vet surmised that Goldie died suddenly and without suffering, most likely from a ruptured artery. She is buried in back near the woods.

Anyone who has a beloved animal in his/her life, dreads the time when death comes. Most often there are signs of illness, vet visits and decisions to be made. Occasionally death comes quickly and apparently without suffering. Easier perhaps, but such a shock for the other animal companions and the human companions.

Goldie was a well-mannered horse, easy for us to care for. When she was young, her training was in a vigorous, highly disciplined method. It was too intense for her sweet, nervous spirit and caused her stress. When she was placed in a more normal environment, she was anxious, suffered separation anxiety with regard to her fellow barn mates and was difficult to ride. Her compassionate owner thought a relaxing retirement would be the kindest solution to Goldie’s discomfort.

Goldie seemed comfortable here at Sky Ranch. The comfort of the same schedule every day, the only “challenge” being led out to the pasture, seemed to suit her. She was never sick the whole time she was here. I think she was content. We grieve for losing her. We will miss her.

End of Life

Digger

The inexorable and mysterious circle of life continues.  The “business” of having a sanctuary for horses, an end home for these wonderful creatures, involves witnessing the end of their lives. It’s always heart rending and never easy. Even when we know suffering will be ended, it’s so hard to let go.

In most cases, the horses are euthanized after a final vet visit determines there is no hope for recovery, and there is only pain. Occasionally nature steps in and ends the life. On January 20th, Digger, our gentle (and sometimes silly) Thoroughbred dropped to the ground and died suddenly. The horses had all just had hoof trims and had been released into the pasture. Digger was in his thirties and to leave the world that way, without any apparent pain or suffering, is not in and of itself  troubling, but it left us all, humans and horses alike, in shock. He trotted out to the pasture alive and then he was gone. His heart probably gave out.

When at all possible, we are with the horses when they die. However,  I can’t bring myself to witness the burial. Horses are large, plus or minus a thousand pounds. They can’t be gently laid in a box and buried in the garden.

We are fortunate and have great neighbors.,Tony and John Ormond, who have a back hoe business and who bury our horses. Friends who have witnessed the burials assure me that the burial is done with gentle respect. Our horses are laid at rest with care at their final home. Digger was buried that same afternoon in the pasture where he fell.

The surviving horses are affected when one of them dies. Their world is not the same after the loss of a barn mate. Chloe, our newest resident, had become very attached to Digger in recent weeks, and  it was a week after he died before she stopped calling for him and before she started eating again. I still wake up every morning having to remember that Digger is gone. (He was a horse who liked to stick out his tongue and seeing that image in the barn every morning would make anyone smile.) A sweeter, easier horse to love never lived!

The animals in our lives take up a big space in our hearts. As the wonderful poet Mary Oliver said regarding her long standing relationship with her dogs: “We would do anything to keep them with us, and to keep them young. The one gift we cannot give.” *

A neighbor’s horse, Indy, died recently. She was often seen by the fence next door schmoozing with our horses in the adjacent pasture. Now she’s not there, and we all miss her.

I remember all of them: their unique personalities, quirks, and preferences. They are all treasured in memory. Rest in peace Digger.

Chloe Gets an Acupuncture Treatment

Chloe with Dr. UgarteThe Holidays are here at Sky Ranch Sanctuary! We’d like to share with you one of our many happy events over the past few months.

We were lucky that Dr. Greg Ugarte, a veterinarian who specializes in acupuncture for horses, was coming up our way from his place in Southern California. He examined Chloe (our newest arrival) and gave her acupressure and acupuncture treatments. She stood quietly and seemed to relax into it.

Chloe arrived at Sky Ranch extremely underweight and had been confined to a small pen infested with flies.

Dr. Ugarte said that in addition to needing more pounds, Chloe has some issues with her liver and recommended adding milk thistle powder, dandelion root powder and aloe vera juice to her diet to help with detoxification.

After the treatment, Chloe was able to move more freely in the pasture and was able to lower her head more comfortably to eat. Clearly it was a positive result for her and her well being. She has gained over 75 pounds since coming to Sky Ranch in July, and we’re working on adding more!

It was a good visit and we look forward to the next one!

Chloe's acupuncture treatment

The new year is on its way!  Looking back on this past year brings up feelings of sadness as we lost horses to age related illnesses. But new horses arrived, and they lifted our spirits. We look forward to 2024 and doing all we can for the wonderful creatures who call Sky Ranch their home.

Happy Holidays and thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Gratitude…

Horses on the RanchAt Thanksgiving, our thoughts at Sky Ranch Sanctuary turn to gratitude.

The news confirms what we suspected: that there is much that is wrong with the world, but that cannot diminish what is right with it! And having the opportunity to care for the wonderful creatures who live on this ranch is right and true and for that opportunity we are grateful.

Let me give you a thumbnail sketch of our current residents.

Digger has been here the longest. He arrived emaciated due to bad teeth and an owner unwilling to fix them. Though his teeth were treated, he still cannot chew hay and is on a diet of senior feed and hay pellets. He’s a Thoroughbred and a true gentleman!

Digger

Digger is smitten with Meadow, a Mustang mare who came to us through Animal Services. She continued escaping from her previous home and kept ending up at Animal Services because her owner couldn’t keep her in and safe.

Meadow

Moose, a handsome running Quarter Horse, was “losing” his owner who was leaving the area. Moose has some issues with his feet, and it was difficult for his owner to find a home for him since he shouldn’t be ridden. He only needs to hang out in the pasture and be a horse here.

Moose

Goldie, a beautiful Palomino mare, is a bit skittish and difficult to ride. Being prey animals, all horses worry to some degree, but she takes that to another level. Her owner and our vet thought an environment with few demands would be the best situation for her.

Goldie

Chloe, our latest horse featured on the website, arrived extremely thin in July from a small, fly infested pen. She’s a petite Arabian mare. Chloe is gaining weight and getting accustomed to being in the pasture with the other horses and having lots of space.

Chloe

How lucky we are to be able to care for them! They give so much back, and we will regale you with some of their entertaining antics in future emails.

We are also grateful for our donors who make this possible!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Chloe

She’s gained 60+ lbs since this photo was taken in July!

In July, we welcomed Chloe as a new resident at the sanctuary. Chloe is a petite, senior Arabian mare and was living in untenable conditions. When sanctuary staff and our vet visited the place where she was living, she was emaciated and covered with flies. For a number of reasons, her owners were unable to provide humane care for her, and when they needed to move they called us to see if we could take any or all of the three horses on the property. Our vet concluded that Chloe was the horse that could best be served by our sanctuary.

Our first step was to clean her up and apply fly spray, and the next step was to take care of her teeth. Due to years of neglect, her teeth are not in great shape, and she can’t chew hay. She has been doing well on senior feed and hay cubes and has put on 60 plus pounds to date. We believe she can benefit from chiropractic care and acupuncture , and we are in the process of setting up those treatments.

She is out in the pasture with the other horses now, but it has taken her some time to adjust. (Goldie, our Palomino beauty, has taken Chloe under her wing and looks after her.) Chloe was in a small pen for many years, and she is having to learn how to deal with all the space she has! She’s a sweet horse to handle, and we love having her here with us.
